FAQ
What is the best stone for patios?
While there’s no shortage of choice available on the market, including limestone, porcelain, and slate, there’s no doubt that Indian sandstone paving is one of the UK’s most singularly popular options for paving and patio areas. This is largely due to the many practical advantages it offers in terms of its durability and longevity, but also for the wide range of colour options available, and the ease with which it can be moulded into various designs.
Is natural stone paving slippery?
Indian sandstone is not slippery, no. In fact, it’s actually slip-resistant! That makes it a widely-favoured choice for UK homeowners, especially since let’s be honest, British weather can be somewhat unpredictable. Not every stones shares this handy trait - alternatives like marble paving have been known to get quite slippery in the later months of the year, when winter weather sets in. If you need a little more detail, we’ve explained more fully in this post.
What is calibrated stone paving?
Calibrated paving slabs have gone through a process to make sure they have a fairly even and regular depth, ensuring that it’s much easier for them to be laid.
Now, natural stone paving slabs tend to be relatively rough initially (as do most raw natural materials). Since they need a full bed of mortar to be laid, their natural variations in thickness means that particular care needs to be taken to make sure that the entire surface ends up even and stable. Calibrated stone paving has all been machined to the same thickness beforehand, which makes this part of the process much easier. If you need more detail, you can read more about it on our dedicated blog post.
