Raj Green steps introduce a more grounded and natural presence to changes in garden level, softening transitions with warm earthy tones that sit comfortably within planted, traditional, and organic-style landscapes. Instead of creating sharp visual breaks, they help the garden feel more connected, allowing hard landscaping to blend more naturally with surrounding greenery and planting schemes.
The stone is defined by its blend of sage greens, muted browns, and soft buff tones, creating a naturally varied surface that feels established and timeless rather than uniform or manufactured. This tonal variation is what allows Raj Green to sit so comfortably in more natural garden designs, where materials are expected to work with their surroundings rather than dominate them.
Each step is finished with a sawn and sandblasted surface, providing a smooth and consistent finish underfoot while still retaining the natural warmth and texture associated with sandstone. The bullnosed edge refines the overall profile, softening the transition between levels and allowing the steps to settle into the landscape without harsh definition.
Quadrants extend this natural movement further, allowing steps to follow curved or irregular layouts and helping the overall design feel less structured and more organic. This makes them particularly effective in gardens where flow and softness are prioritised over straight architectural lines.
With a calibrated thickness of around 50mm, these steps are strong, stable, and suitable for a wide range of domestic and commercial landscaping applications, delivering consistency both visually and structurally across different project types.

Raj Green Indian Sandstone – Colour Variations in Wet & Dry Conditions
Raj Green Indian Sandstone naturally changes in appearance depending on the weather. When dry, it displays a subtle blend of muted greens, browns, greys, and buff tones, giving a soft, earthy look. However, when wet, the colours deepen and become more pronounced, revealing richer greens, deeper browns, and enhanced variations that bring out the stone’s natural beauty. This dynamic colour shift is a key characteristic of natural sandstone, adding depth and interest to patios, pathways, and outdoor spaces. If you prefer a more consistent look, consider sealing the stone to help control how much the colours intensify when wet.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio
Creating a beautiful and long-lasting patio requires the right materials and a solid installation process. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a professional finish, using high-quality paving slabs, jointing compounds, and essential finishing touches available at Bridge Street Stone.
Step 1: Plan & Prepare the Area
Before starting, decide on the size, shape, and layout of your patio. Mark out the area using string lines or spray paint and ensure there’s a slight gradient for water drainage.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Browse our range of natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Measuring tape & string line – For accurate planning
✔ Shovel & wheelbarrow – To clear the area
Step 2: Dig Out & Create the Sub-Base
Excavate the area to a depth of 150-200mm to allow for the base layers. Compact a 100mm layer of MOT Type 1 using a wacker plate to create a firm foundation.
You’ll Need:
✔ MOT Type 1 hardcore – Order high-quality sub-base material
✔ Wacker plate or compactor – Essential for a solid foundation
Step 3: Prepare the Bedding Layer
A mortar bed is needed to hold your paving in place. Use a mix of 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement, adding water until it reaches a firm, workable consistency. Lay the mortar to a depth of 30-50mm across the area.
You’ll Need:
✔ Sharp sand & cement – Shop high-quality materials
✔ Mixing tools – Cement mixer or bucket and spade
Step 4: Lay the Paving Slabs
Start laying the slabs from one corner, ensuring a consistent joint gap between each. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place and check levels with a spirit level.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Explore our natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Rubber mallet & spirit level – For precision placement
Step 5: Joint & Finish the Patio
Once the mortar has set (24-48 hours), fill the joints using a high-quality jointing compound or traditional sand and cement mix. Brush the compound into the joints and lightly spray with water to activate.
You’ll Need:
✔ Jointing compound or grout – Browse our range of easy-to-use paving grouts
✔ Soft brush & hosepipe – To apply and set the compound
Step 6: Add the Finishing Touches
Complete your patio with matching edging stones, decorative aggregates, or stone ornaments to enhance the overall design.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving edgings & setts – Define your patio with stylish edging
✔ Decorative aggregates & stone ornaments – Browse finishing touches for your garden
Enjoy Your New Patio!

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone
To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
