Golden Leaf Indian Sandstone Circle

If your garden could do with a little more warmth, our Golden Leaf Indian Sandstone Circle is a lovely way to introduce it. There’s something naturally inviting about this stone, with its mix of golden yellows, soft buffs and warmer earthy shades creating a feature that feels right at home amongst lawns, planting and the rest of the garden.

And because it’s natural sandstone, those colours aren’t the same from one piece to the next. You’ll find lighter sections alongside richer golden tones, with the occasional grey or purple marking coming through too. Once it rains, the colours become deeper and more noticeable, bringing out even more of the variation within the stone.

The naturally riven surface adds plenty of character without making the circle feel too rustic, so there’s a lot you can do with it. It could become a sunny little seating spot at the end of the garden, sit amongst planting as a standalone feature, or form the centre of a much larger patio.

Finding the right spot for your Golden Leaf sandstone circle

A circle doesn’t always have to sit right in the middle of everything. Sometimes they work best tucked into a quieter part of the garden with a table and chairs, or positioned somewhere that naturally catches your eye as you step outside.

If you do want to build a larger patio around it, there are kits available with squaring-off pieces to make that transition much easier. Or you can keep the curved edge exposed and let the circle stand out against lawn, gravel or planting.

Golden Leaf also pairs beautifully with other natural materials, particularly if you like a garden to feel warm and established rather than overly uniform. And, as you’d expect with natural sandstone, there will always be differences in colour, markings and texture between individual pieces. That variation is a big part of its charm and means no two finished circles will look quite the same.

Natural Colour Variation in Golden Leaf Indian Sandstone

Golden Leaf sandstone features a rich blend of warm tones, including golden yellows, honey ambers, soft browns, and occasional buffs or greys. The natural colour variation gives each circle a lively and inviting appearance, perfect for adding warmth to outdoor spaces.

As a natural stone product, each piece is unique, with subtle shifts in tone and texture that create a character-rich finish once installed. For those wanting to deepen the tones, a colour-enhancing sealer can be applied after installation.

Golden Leaf Indian Sandstone – Colour Variations in Wet & Dry Conditions

  • When Dry – The stone shows a mix of light golds, creamy buffs, and gentle warmth, creating a sunny, relaxed look.

  • When Wet – The colours intensify dramatically, revealing deep honey tones, stronger contrast, and a richer, more vibrant appearance overall.

A sealer can help preserve the wet look while protecting the stone from everyday wear and staining.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio

How to Lay a Stone Paving Circle – Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a stone paving circle is a great way to create a beautiful focal point in your garden or patio. Whether you're using it as a standalone feature or incorporating it into a larger paved area, this guide will walk you through each step of the process to ensure a clean, long-lasting finish.

✅ What You’ll Need:

  • Your chosen stone circle kit (centre + rings, with or without squaring-off kit)

  • MOT Type 1 sub-base material

  • Sharp sand and cement for mortar (typical mix 4:1)

  • String line and centre peg (for layout)

  • Priming slurry (optional but recommended)

  • Spirit level

  • Rubber mallet

  • Grout or jointing compound

🪨 Step 1: Prepare the Base

  1. Mark out the area using the circle size as a guide. Use a peg and string line to mark a perfect circle.

  2. Excavate to a depth of approx. 150–200mm, depending on ground conditions.

  3. Add and compact 100–125mm of MOT Type 1 hardcore to form a solid sub-base.

  4. Ensure the area is level, with a slight fall away from the centre for drainage (typically 1:60).

⚙️ Step 2: Dry Lay & Plan Your Layout

  1. Dry lay the full circle before fixing to ensure correct spacing and placement.

  2. Start with the centre piece, then work outwards in rings.

  3. If using the squaring-off kit, decide how you want it to align with existing paving or garden features.

🧱 Step 3: Lay the Paving Circle

  1. Mix a mortar bed (4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement) to a workable consistency.

  2. Begin with the centre stone, laying it on a full mortar bed around 30–40mm thick.

  3. Use a priming slurry on the back of each piece to improve adhesion (especially recommended for smoother stone).

  4. Work outwards, laying each ring of stones one at a time, using a rubber mallet to level and position each slab.

  5. Maintain consistent joints between each stone (typically 10–15mm).

🧽 Step 4: Jointing & Finishing

  1. Allow the paving to set for 24–48 hours before jointing.

  2. Use a suitable jointing compound or mortar to fill gaps between the stones.

  3. Clean off excess grout and rinse the surface thoroughly before it dries.

🔲 If Using a Squaring-Off Kit:

  • Lay the squaring-off pieces after the full circle is complete and set, ensuring they line up neatly with the surrounding paving.

  • Continue your patio from these squared edges for a seamless finish.

🛠️ Top Tips:

  • Always check your levels and alignment with a string line or spirit level as you go.

  • Wear gloves and safety goggles when mixing mortar or using tools.

  • For best results, lay on a dry day above 5°C and avoid heavy rain for 48 hours after installation.

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone

To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
