Our Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone Project Packs make it easy to achieve a balanced, traditional patio layout, without the need to plan out each individual slab size. With a mix of light and mid-grey tones, it’s a popular choice that sits comfortably in both modern garden designs and more classic outdoor spaces.
Each pack includes a blend of sizes set out in a standard project pack layout, making it easy to create a natural, varied pattern across your patio. It’s a practical choice if you want a ready-made solution that still brings the character and variation sandstone is known for, without overcomplicating the process.
Each slab is approximately 18mm thick, making them lighter and easier to handle while still providing a durable surface for everyday use. The naturally riven finish gives that familiar textured feel underfoot, along with a reliable grip that's ideal for the typical British weather conditions.
As with all Kandla Grey paving, you can expect natural variation throughout, with subtle shifts in tone, texture and veining from slab to slab. When wet, the grey tones deepen slightly, bringing out more of the natural character before returning to a softer, more consistent look as the stone dries.
We deliver nationwide, however, if you prefer you can also collect from our Colne stone yard. Trade pricing is available on larger orders, and if you need any help before ordering, our team is always on hand – so don't hesitate to get in touch!

Colour Variation – Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone
Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone is renowned for its beautiful blend of light and mid-grey tones, offering a modern and sophisticated look. As a natural stone, each slab is unique, featuring subtle variations in shading and texture that enhance its character.
In dry conditions, the stone typically appears in soft silvers and light greys, creating a clean and contemporary aesthetic. When wet, the colours deepen and become more pronounced, revealing richer greys and occasional blue undertones that add depth and vibrancy to your outdoor space.
These natural variations are a key feature of Indian sandstone, making every patio or pathway one of a kind. If you prefer a more consistent appearance, consider using a breathable stone sealer to help stabilise the colour.
Example of the colour variation with Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone
Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone – Wet vs. Dry Appearance
One of the standout features of Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone is how its appearance changes depending on the weather. Like all natural stone, its colours shift subtly between dry and wet conditions, adding character and depth to your outdoor space.
-
When Dry – The stone showcases a soft, muted grey palette, with gentle variations between light and mid-grey tones. This creates a modern, understated look that blends beautifully with both contemporary and traditional landscapes.
-
When Wet – The colours deepen and become more pronounced, revealing richer greys, subtle blue hues, and enhanced natural veining. The increased contrast makes for a more dramatic and striking appearance.
This natural variation is part of the unique charm of Kandla Grey sandstone, ensuring that your patio, pathway, or garden feature always has a dynamic, ever-changing aesthetic. If you prefer to maintain a more consistent look, applying a breathable stone sealer can help control the intensity of colour changes.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio
Creating a beautiful and long-lasting patio requires the right materials and a solid installation process. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a professional finish, using high-quality paving slabs, jointing compounds, and essential finishing touches available at Bridge Street Stone.
Step 1: Plan & Prepare the Area
Before starting, decide on the size, shape, and layout of your patio. Mark out the area using string lines or spray paint and ensure there’s a slight gradient for water drainage.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Browse our range of natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Measuring tape & string line – For accurate planning
✔ Shovel & wheelbarrow – To clear the area
Step 2: Dig Out & Create the Sub-Base
Excavate the area to a depth of 150-200mm to allow for the base layers. Compact a 100mm layer of MOT Type 1 using a wacker plate to create a firm foundation.
You’ll Need:
✔ MOT Type 1 hardcore – Order high-quality sub-base material
✔ Wacker plate or compactor – Essential for a solid foundation
Step 3: Prepare the Bedding Layer
A mortar bed is needed to hold your paving in place. Use a mix of 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement, adding water until it reaches a firm, workable consistency. Lay the mortar to a depth of 30-50mm across the area.
You’ll Need:
✔ Sharp sand & cement – Shop high-quality materials
✔ Mixing tools – Cement mixer or bucket and spade
Step 4: Lay the Paving Slabs
Start laying the slabs from one corner, ensuring a consistent joint gap between each. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place and check levels with a spirit level.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Explore our natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Rubber mallet & spirit level – For precision placement
Step 5: Joint & Finish the Patio
Once the mortar has set (24-48 hours), fill the joints using a high-quality jointing compound or traditional sand and cement mix. Brush the compound into the joints and lightly spray with water to activate.
You’ll Need:
✔ Jointing compound or grout – Browse our range of easy-to-use paving grouts
✔ Soft brush & hosepipe – To apply and set the compound
Step 6: Add the Finishing Touches
Complete your patio with matching edging stones, decorative aggregates, or stone ornaments to enhance the overall design.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving edgings & setts – Define your patio with stylish edging
✔ Decorative aggregates & stone ornaments – Browse finishing touches for your garden
Enjoy Your New Patio!
By following these steps and using high-quality materials from Bridge Street Stone, your patio will be both beautiful and long-lasting.

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone
To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
