Raj Green Indian Sandstone Circle

A Raj Green Indian Sandstone Circle is a beautiful way to introduce a more traditional feel into your garden design. Whether you’re creating a dedicated seating area, adding interest to a patio or looking for a standout feature within a larger landscaping project, the natural tones and curved design help create a space that feels carefully considered while still blending effortlessly into its surroundings.

Raj Green Indian sandstone is loved for its distinctive mix of earthy colours, with soft sage greens, warm browns, subtle greys and occasional buff tones running through the stone. These natural variations give every circle its own character, creating a relaxed, organic finish that works particularly well in gardens with planting, lawns and other natural materials.

The circular layout adds something different to a traditional paved area, helping break up straight lines and create a feature that naturally draws attention. A stone circle can work beautifully as the centre of a patio, a base for garden furniture or as a transition between different areas of your outdoor space. The naturally riven surface adds texture and depth, enhancing the authentic look of the sandstone while providing a practical finish for everyday use.

Available in a choice of sizes, our Raj Green Indian Sandstone Circle kits give you flexibility when planning your garden. You can choose a standalone circular design for a more defined feature or select a kit with squaring-off pieces to extend the circle neatly into a larger paved area.

Creating an Outdoor Feature with Raj Green Sandstone Circles

When planning your stone circle, it’s worth thinking about how it will work alongside the rest of your garden. A circle positioned within a larger patio can create a natural centre point for seating or entertaining areas, while a smaller circle can add detail to compact gardens without overwhelming the space.

The squaring-off option can also change the overall look of the finished design. Keeping the curved edge creates a softer, more decorative feature, while extending the circle into surrounding paving creates a more integrated layout that works well for larger patios.

As with all natural sandstone, every Raj Green circle will have its own subtle differences in colour, texture and markings. These variations are what give natural stone its appeal, ensuring the finished result feels unique rather than manufactured.

Natural Colour Variation in Raj Green Indian Sandstone

Raj Green Indian Sandstone is renowned for its subtle colour blend, ranging from sage green and soft grey to occasional buff and brown hues. These natural tones vary slightly from piece to piece, creating an organic, character-rich surface that fits seamlessly into traditional or countryside landscapes.

Each circle kit is hand-selected to ensure a balanced mix of tones, with occasional natural veining, fossil markings, and texture shifts that add authenticity to the final finish.

For those seeking a more vibrant look, applying a colour-enhancing natural stone sealer can help bring out the depth and contrast within the stone.

Raj Green Indian Sandstone – Colour Variations in Wet & Dry Conditions

Like all natural stone, Raj Green Sandstone changes subtly depending on moisture levels — a key part of its charm.

  • When Dry – Expect a soft, earthy colour palette with muted greens, pale browns, and occasional grey or buff highlights for a relaxed, natural look.

  • When Wet – Colours darken and intensify, revealing deeper greens, rich browns, and stronger contrast between tones and textures.

If you prefer the richer wet look year-round, a breathable, colour-enhancing sealer can help retain that finish while protecting the stone from staining and weathering.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio

How to Lay a Stone Paving Circle – Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a stone paving circle is a great way to create a beautiful focal point in your garden or patio. Whether you're using it as a standalone feature or incorporating it into a larger paved area, this guide will walk you through each step of the process to ensure a clean, long-lasting finish.

What You’ll Need:

  • Your chosen stone circle kit (centre + rings, with or without squaring-off kit)

  • MOT Type 1 sub-base material

  • Sharp sand and cement for mortar (typical mix 4:1)

  • String line and centre peg (for layout)

  • Priming slurry (optional but recommended)

  • Spirit level

  • Rubber mallet

  • Grout or jointing compound

🪨 Step 1: Prepare the Base

  1. Mark out the area using the circle size as a guide. Use a peg and string line to mark a perfect circle.

  2. Excavate to a depth of approx. 150–200mm, depending on ground conditions.

  3. Add and compact 100–125mm of MOT Type 1 hardcore to form a solid sub-base.

  4. Ensure the area is level, with a slight fall away from the centre for drainage (typically 1:60).

⚙️ Step 2: Dry Lay & Plan Your Layout

  1. Dry lay the full circle before fixing to ensure correct spacing and placement.

  2. Start with the centre piece, then work outwards in rings.

  3. If using the squaring-off kit, decide how you want it to align with existing paving or garden features.

🧱 Step 3: Lay the Paving Circle

  1. Mix a mortar bed (4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement) to a workable consistency.

  2. Begin with the centre stone, laying it on a full mortar bed around 30–40mm thick.

  3. Use a priming slurry on the back of each piece to improve adhesion (especially recommended for smoother stone).

  4. Work outwards, laying each ring of stones one at a time, using a rubber mallet to level and position each slab.

  5. Maintain consistent joints between each stone (typically 10–15mm).

🧽 Step 4: Jointing & Finishing

  1. Allow the paving to set for 24–48 hours before jointing.

  2. Use a suitable jointing compound or mortar to fill gaps between the stones.

  3. Clean off excess grout and rinse the surface thoroughly before it dries.

🔲 If Using a Squaring-Off Kit:

  • Lay the squaring-off pieces after the full circle is complete and set, ensuring they line up neatly with the surrounding paving.

  • Continue your patio from these squared edges for a seamless finish.

🛠️ Top Tips:

  • Always check your levels and alignment with a string line or spirit level as you go.

  • Wear gloves and safety goggles when mixing mortar or using tools.

  • For best results, lay on a dry day above 5°C and avoid heavy rain for 48 hours after installation.

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone

To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
