Our Golden Leaf riven sandstone steps are perfect for connecting different levels within the garden while keeping the overall space feeling cohesive and natural. Whether you’re creating a step up onto a patio, linking pathways together, or finishing off a raised seating area, they help everything flow more smoothly and give the project a much more finished overall look.
Designed to complement our Golden Leaf paving, these steps carry the same natural colouring and riven texture throughout the space, helping patios, pathways, and raised areas feel more curated. The hand-finished rock-faced edge adds a more traditional look, while the naturally textured surface gives them the rustic character Indian sandstone is well known for.
Golden Leaf sandstone is particularly popular for its warmer colouring, with natural blends of golden buff, honey, and soft amber tones running throughout the stone. Some slabs appear slightly richer, while others have lighter areas and natural banding, which helps the paving feel less flat and gives the finished patio a more natural, laid-over-time appearance once installed.
The naturally riven surface also gives these steps plenty of texture underfoot. In wetter weather, the textured finish helps provide extra grip, making the steps feel more practical for everyday use.

Raj Green Indian Sandstone – Colour Variations in Wet & Dry Conditions
Raj Green Indian Sandstone naturally changes in appearance depending on the weather. When dry, it displays a subtle blend of muted greens, browns, greys, and buff tones, giving a soft, earthy look. However, when wet, the colours deepen and become more pronounced, revealing richer greens, deeper browns, and enhanced variations that bring out the stone’s natural beauty. This dynamic colour shift is a key characteristic of natural sandstone, adding depth and interest to patios, pathways, and outdoor spaces. If you prefer a more consistent look, consider sealing the stone to help control how much the colours intensify when wet.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio
Creating a beautiful and long-lasting patio requires the right materials and a solid installation process. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a professional finish, using high-quality paving slabs, jointing compounds, and essential finishing touches available at Bridge Street Stone.
Step 1: Plan & Prepare the Area
Before starting, decide on the size, shape, and layout of your patio. Mark out the area using string lines or spray paint and ensure there’s a slight gradient for water drainage.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Browse our range of natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Measuring tape & string line – For accurate planning
✔ Shovel & wheelbarrow – To clear the area
Step 2: Dig Out & Create the Sub-Base
Excavate the area to a depth of 150-200mm to allow for the base layers. Compact a 100mm layer of MOT Type 1 using a wacker plate to create a firm foundation.
You’ll Need:
✔ MOT Type 1 hardcore – Order high-quality sub-base material
✔ Wacker plate or compactor – Essential for a solid foundation
Step 3: Prepare the Bedding Layer
A mortar bed is needed to hold your paving in place. Use a mix of 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement, adding water until it reaches a firm, workable consistency. Lay the mortar to a depth of 30-50mm across the area.
You’ll Need:
✔ Sharp sand & cement – Shop high-quality materials
✔ Mixing tools – Cement mixer or bucket and spade
Step 4: Lay the Paving Slabs
Start laying the slabs from one corner, ensuring a consistent joint gap between each. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place and check levels with a spirit level.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Explore our natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Rubber mallet & spirit level – For precision placement
Step 5: Joint & Finish the Patio
Once the mortar has set (24-48 hours), fill the joints using a high-quality jointing compound or traditional sand and cement mix. Brush the compound into the joints and lightly spray with water to activate.
You’ll Need:
✔ Jointing compound or grout – Browse our range of easy-to-use paving grouts
✔ Soft brush & hosepipe – To apply and set the compound
Step 6: Add the Finishing Touches
Complete your patio with matching edging stones, decorative aggregates, or stone ornaments to enhance the overall design.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving edgings & setts – Define your patio with stylish edging
✔ Decorative aggregates & stone ornaments – Browse finishing touches for your garden
Enjoy Your New Patio!
By following these steps and using high-quality materials from Bridge Street Stone, your patio will be both beautiful and long-lasting.

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone
To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
