Whitby Indian sandstone paving takes its cue from traditional Yorkstone, with a colour range that feels more settled and understated. The mix of greys, buffs, and occasional rusty tones gives it that familiar, time-worn look you’d expect from older paving, making it a great fit for spaces you want to have a timeless feel.
Our Whitby Indian sandstone paving is supplied in single-size options, including 600 x 600 and 900 x 600 slabs, allowing you to plan layouts with more control.
Whether you’re creating a uniform grid or working around an existing paved area, individual slabs make it easier to order accurately and avoid over- or under-ordering for your project. If you’re unsure, you can use our paving calculator to help quickly work out the exact quantities you’ll need before ordering.
The hand-cut edges and naturally riven surface of these stones give it a rustic texture that feels more natural underfoot. It also helps with grip in wet conditions, which makes it a practical choice for patios and paths.
Whitby sandstone brings a softer, more refined finish to outdoor spaces, complementing rather than competing with its surroundings. Once laid, it softens into the surrounding space, working particularly well alongside brickwork, stone walls, and established planting.
At Bridge Street Stone, all of our sandstone is sourced from trusted Indian quarries and selected for consistency and quality. Each batch offers a beautifully balanced mix of tones while keeping the natural variation that defines sandstone.
We deliver across the UK, or, if you prefer, you can collect your order directly from our Colne stone yard. We also offer trade pricing for larger quantity orders. If you need help working out sizes or planning your layout, our team is always on hand – just get in touch!

Natural Colour Variation in Whitby Indian Sandstone
Whitby Indian Sandstone is renowned for its beautiful blend of natural tones, ranging from sandy buff to pale yellows with orange tones and occasional fossil markings. As a natural stone, each piece is unique, with variations in shading and texture that add depth, character, and a truly organic look to any outdoor space. Over time, exposure to the elements may further enhance these natural variations, making every patio or pathway distinctive and full of charm. If you’re looking for a harmonious yet varied aesthetic, Whitby Sandstone is a perfect choice, offering timeless appeal with an authentic, rustic finish.
Whitby Sandstone – Colour Variations in Wet & Dry Conditions
Whitby Indian Sandstone has a soft, pale appearance when dry, with light beige, cream, and subtle yellow tones, along with faint fossil-like imprints that give it a natural charm. When wet, the colours deepen significantly as creams turn into richer honey-gold shades, and the fossil patterns become more pronounced. You may also notice additional tones like soft pinks, greys, or amber emerging, giving the stone a warmer and more vibrant look overall.
For those who prefer the enhanced wet look and want to protect the stone from staining and weathering, sealing is highly recommended. A good quality sandstone sealer will help preserve the colour depth, reduce water absorption, and make ongoing maintenance easier.

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying a Patio
Creating a beautiful and long-lasting patio requires the right materials and a solid installation process. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a professional finish, using high-quality paving slabs, jointing compounds, and essential finishing touches available at Bridge Street Stone.
Step 1: Plan & Prepare the Area
Before starting, decide on the size, shape, and layout of your patio. Mark out the area using string lines or spray paint and ensure there’s a slight gradient for water drainage.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Browse our range of natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Measuring tape & string line – For accurate planning
✔ Shovel & wheelbarrow – To clear the area
Step 2: Dig Out & Create the Sub-Base
Excavate the area to a depth of 150-200mm to allow for the base layers. Compact a 100mm layer of MOT Type 1 using a wacker plate to create a firm foundation.
You’ll Need:
✔ MOT Type 1 hardcore – Order high-quality sub-base material
✔ Wacker plate or compactor – Essential for a solid foundation
Step 3: Prepare the Bedding Layer
A mortar bed is needed to hold your paving in place. Use a mix of 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement, adding water until it reaches a firm, workable consistency. Lay the mortar to a depth of 30-50mm across the area.
You’ll Need:
✔ Sharp sand & cement – Shop high-quality materials
✔ Mixing tools – Cement mixer or bucket and spade
Step 4: Lay the Paving Slabs
Start laying the slabs from one corner, ensuring a consistent joint gap between each. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place and check levels with a spirit level.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving slabs – Explore our natural stone and porcelain paving
✔ Rubber mallet & spirit level – For precision placement
Step 5: Joint & Finish the Patio
Once the mortar has set (24-48 hours), fill the joints using a high-quality jointing compound or traditional sand and cement mix. Brush the compound into the joints and lightly spray with water to activate.
You’ll Need:
✔ Jointing compound or grout – Browse our range of easy-to-use paving grouts
✔ Soft brush & hosepipe – To apply and set the compound
Step 6: Add the Finishing Touches
Complete your patio with matching edging stones, decorative aggregates, or stone ornaments to enhance the overall design.
You’ll Need:
✔ Paving edgings & setts – Define your patio with stylish edging
✔ Decorative aggregates & stone ornaments – Browse finishing touches for your garden
Enjoy Your New Patio!
By following these steps and using high-quality materials from Bridge Street Stone, your patio will be both beautiful and long-lasting.

How to Clean & Maintain Indian Sandstone
To keep your Indian Sandstone paving looking its best, regular maintenance is key. Sweep away debris to prevent dirt build-up and clean periodically with a mild soapy water solution or a specialist stone cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers at high settings, as they can damage the stone’s surface. For long-term protection, consider applying a breathable sealant to help resist stains and enhance colour retention. Over time, natural weathering will add character, but with proper care, your sandstone will remain a beautiful feature in your outdoor space for years to come.
