Can you lay paving in winter?

Getting ahead with garden maintenance is always a good idea. After all, who doesn't want to hit the ground running come spring? Winter can be a surprisingly good time to take stock of your space and figure out what needs changing and upgrading before the new year, and new paving may very well be on that list.

If you’re thinking about getting started on a paving project but find yourself wondering if you can actually lay it in winter, this blog is for you. So, can you lay paving in winter? The short answer is it depends. There’s a few stipulations that come with laying limestone, Yorkstone, and porcelain paving this time of year. It doesn't mean it’s impossible, but it can be more difficult. Here’s what you need to keep in mind.

Why winter conditions can be tricky for paving projects

Winter weather can be unpredictable, with freezing temperatures, frost, and occasional snow storms - especially here up North. (Although, we're sure we don't have to remind you of that!) While it's not impossible to lay paving during winter, the colder, wetter conditions do make it a lot more challenging. Rain and freezing temperatures can interfere with the drying and bonding processes of cement, and frost can cause the ground to expand and contract, potentially leading to cracks or weaker joints.

Here are a few examples of why laying paving in winter can be difficult:

  • Longer drying time: Cold and damp conditions slow down the drying process, meaning your paving project could take much longer to complete, which leaves it at risk of the elements.
  • Frost damage: If the temperatures dip below freezing (zero degrees), the water in the cement will freeze, leading to cracks or weakened bonds once the temperatures rise.
  • Harder to handle materials: Freezing conditions are generally more uncomfortable to work in, making materials like cement and mortar harder to mix and work with. This increases the risk of a less-than-perfect finish, which no one wants!
  • Waterlogging: Excess water from rain or snow can become trapped in the surface, leading to waterlogging, which interferes with the setting process and causes instability in the base, resulting in shifting stones or a compromised finish.

When can you lay paving in winter?

Laying paving in winter is possible; it just requires a little extra care! While freezing temperatures can cause the cement to freeze and weaken its bond, you can still tackle your project if you plan around the weather. The key is to avoid working in sub-zero conditions and aim for dry spells when possible. This might mean your plans are a little touch-and-go because you'll always be playing it by ear. Excess rain or snow can cause waterlogging, but as long as you keep the base dry and covered, you can work quite successfully through the colder months. Just remember, it might take a little longer for everything to set.
