4 ways to make your small garden appear bigger

With the weather turning mild and summer on the horizon, your garden might be calling for your attention. If your garden is on the smaller side, don't let that discourage you. Remember, a garden's beauty and functionality are not determined by its size. In fact, smaller gardens can offer unique opportunities for creativity and design!

At Bridge Street Stone, we're experts in helping our customers create beautiful gardens with Indian sandstone paving, no matter the size. So, if you wish you had a bigger space to enjoy, don't worry; we have some easy and convenient tips and DIY tricks that you can use to make the most of your space. Let's dive right in!

Choose your plants wisely

When it comes to picking plants for your garden, it’s easy to pick the things you’re most drawn to without really giving any mind to how they’d look in your garden. You don't want to overwhelm the space you do have with large plants or ones that will grow to take up lots of floor space. This doesn't mean that you can't have plants, it just means you’ll be better off focusing on smaller, less dense varieties of plants like English roses, geranium psilostemon, and erigeron karvinskianus (daisies) for example.

Create visual interest with vertical plants

Climbing plants are great alternatives to floor-dwelling plants for smaller gardens; you can prop a trellis up against one of your walls and grow an entire wall full of beautiful vibrant leaves or flowers, which will give your garden all the beautiful greenery it needs!

Similarly, you could opt for a shelved garden to keep your plants off the floor, but arrange them in stylish pots or even raised beds if you have the space. The dimensions and different levels will add all the beauty of traditional plant beds to your space while helping it appear larger, all the while without taking up too much of the floor space. This way, you can still enjoy having plants and wildlife without sacrificing your garden's functionality.

Light coloured flooring

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating the illusion of a bigger space. The key to making a space look larger is to keep it well-lit and bright. This applies to your walls, flooring, and fencing. Lighter colours reflect more light and make the space appear larger. When it comes to your flooring specifically, we'd recommend choosing lighter shades of Indian sandstone paving like Fossil Mint (Whitby) Sawn Indian Sandstone, Yellow Mint (Whitby) Sawn Indian Sandstone - 900 x 600 or Golden Leaf Sawn Indian Sandstone. These paving options will visually expand the space, creating an airy and open feel that's brighter and more visually expansive.

When you have your beautiful new light flooring laid, it’s also best to keep it mostly clear of clutter aside from the things you really need, like furniture or a few thoughtfully placed potted plants, to enable the space to feel more open. All of these factors will have you falling in love with your space regardless of its size and give you somewhere to spend the warmer days with your friends and family.
